Helping Families in Need

SMAC Clothing Center - El Centro de Ropa de Shawnee Mission

Information About the Clothing Center

The Clothing Center is operated entirely by volunteers from the Shawnee Mission Area Council PTA. The purpose of this center is to help supply the clothing needs of people who live within the boundaries of the Shawnee Mission School District. The Clothing Center is located in the lower level of Arrowhead Elementary School at 6601 Santa Fe Drive in Overland Park. Clients of the Clothing Center may enter through the southern-most doors on the front of the building.

Any resident of the Shawnee Mission School District who is in need of assistance may "shop" at the Clothing Center; adult and children's clothing items are available to shoppers at no charge. If you have a child attending a Shawnee Mission school you may receive a packet of socks and underwear for each child in your family one time per school year (through May).To receive these you must provide a current report card, a referral letter from your school, or Student ID for each child to be eligible.

The Clothing Center receives clothing from PTA drives and donations of gently used items. Donations may be taken to the Clothing Center during regular school hours from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and left by the Clothing Center gates or inside the building. Donation slips are available upon request.

The Clothing Center is a non-profit organization.

West is Best Scholarship Fund

West is Best Scholarship Fund supplements activity fees and uniform costs for individual students in grades K-12 who demonstrate a need for financial assistance to participate in after-school activities. Students must live or go to school in the Shawnee Mission West attendance area to qualify.  West is Best Scholarship Fund is now providing scholarships for up to 75% of the cost of eligible students’ athletic league fees, Scout uniform fees, equipment purchases and more.  Assistance is based on availability of funds and financial need.  In addition to support from local businesses and individuals, West is Best Scholarship Fund has two major fundraisers planned for 2012 in hopes of providing as much assistance to area children as possible.
American College Testing (ACT) has said that the one predictable indicator of post-high school success is a student’s involvement in activities.  The West is Best Scholarship Fund Board of Directors, made up of parents of West-area students, is proud to help contribute to our students’ success and make a positive difference in the lives of West area children.
